Black History Month Expo

February 10 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Embark on a journey through the remarkable history of black aviators as we proudly showcase their groundbreaking achievements at the National Aviation Education Center (NAEC). Join us for an enlightening exploration of the contributions and legacies of these trailblazing individuals who defied barriers and soared to new heights in the world of aviation.

Our featured Black Aviators represent a diverse array of talents and accomplishments, each leaving an indelible mark on the history of flight. From Eugene Bullard, the first African-American military pilot and combat fighter in World War I, to Charles B. Hall, the Tuskegee Airman who became the first African-American pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft during World War II, their stories are both inspiring and transformative.

Jesse L. Brown’s courageous journey as the first African-American naval aviator, and his ultimate sacrifice during the Korean War, serves as a testament to perseverance and bravery. Meanwhile, the groundbreaking achievements of Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James, the first African-American four-star general in the U.S. military, continue to inspire generations of aspiring aviators.

Venturing beyond the confines of Earth, Mae Jemison blazed a trail as the first African-American woman to travel in space, breaking down barriers and inspiring countless individuals to reach for the stars. Similarly, Melissa “M’Lis” Ward’s pioneering spirit and dedication to aviation education have left an enduring legacy, enriching the lives of future generations of aviators.

At the NAEC, we are committed to celebrating the rich and diverse history of aviation, and our featured Black Aviators exemplify the spirit of innovation, courage, and determination that define the aerospace industry. Explore their stories and accomplishments on our educational resources page, and join us as we honor their extraordinary contributions to flight and inspire the next generation of aviators to reach for their dreams.
